Why Twitter’s new character limit is not all it’s cracked up to be…

Last month Twitter announced that it was trialling a new 280 character limit to selected users instead of the 140 characters which we have known to grow and love.

The decision has received somewhat of a mixed reaction, with the majority happy to hear the news that they will now be able to publish more detailed posts on the social media network. I’m not one of those people.

Why? Where do I start!

The 140 characters limit is what makes Twitter so special! Taking that away is like making a pork pie and deciding to leave out the pork!

I’ve seen some arguments suggesting having more characters will give marketers and businesses more chance to get their message across but I strongly believe that it is a skill to craft tweets into 140 characters and that trait could soon be deemed useless.

Twitter is built on the foundations of short, snappy and concise snippets of text. That’s what attracts me to the social platform on a daily and even hourly basis.

If I wanted to see anything more I’d log into Facebook. Is that what Twitter is about to turn into? I wouldn’t be surprised.

Whether you agree with me or not, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the subject!
